Reading Intervention
What is "Reading Intervention"?
Reading Intervention is targeted literacy instruction for students who are not yet reading "on grade-level." My style of Reading Intervention is based in the "science of reading," which is the culmination of decades of research into exactly how we learn to read. It can be conducted with students of any age, and in fact is most vital for students who seem "too old" for it. If a student finds reading to be difficult, slow, and uncomfortable, reading intervention can help.
How does "Reading Intervention" work?
Reading Intervention focuses predominately on word recognition skills, such as decoding, phonological awareness, and sight words. Often, when a student is reading "below grade level," they require more practice in one or more of these skills.
Each intervention program begins with a quick assessment to determine where a student's needs lie. Students will be asked to read a few lists of words, as well as read a grade-level passage for 1 minute. The former activity demonstrates what particular skills they need practice with, and the latter demonstrates what their current level of fluency is. Lessons are then tailored to each student based on the results of these assessments, and will involve multiple quick activities which allow students to practice the skills they need. Each activity lasts no more than five minutes, which provides a healthy pace that keeps even the shortest attention spans engaged. Students will also receive assistance finding books that feel "just right" for them, and they will be encouraged to read and talk about these books both during and outside of lessons.
Every 5 lessons, students will be reassessed in the same manner (though with different words and passages) to ensure progress is made and, most importantly, to show students how much they have grown. One of the greatest challenges for students who are reading below grade-level is a lack of motivation to read, which is often brought on by how laborious it can feel. When students see just how much they can grow, it builds their confidence. It also encourages them to take their education into their own hands in all aspects of their life, which is one of my top goals as an educator.
